A Simple and Nostalgic Christmas Table Setting

Much as I delight in a beautifully laid table, simplicity is key when it comes to Christmas. It’s been another difficult year for many of us, and by Christmas Eve I think it’s safe to say that we’re all feeling a bit frazzled and in need of a rest. This time of year should be about spending time relaxing, eating comforting food and playing games with our loved ones, not feeling exhausted because we’ve put too much pressure on ourselves to make everything perfect (easier said than done, I know).

I think the key to creating a stress-free Christmas table is being organised and having as much done ahead of time as possible. Other than crackers and a few extra candles, I don’t really do much different at Christmas as I would for any other special gathering, but Christmas does give an excuse to add a bit of subtle sparkle.

I wanted to add some subtle colour pops this year too, using mustard-coloured velvet ribbon, bowls of jewelled-coloured marzipan fruits and adding pink pepper berries to little dried flower posies and gift toppers. Other than that, it was all about creating atmosphere with fairy lights and candles. And what could be simpler than that?

My top tips for creating a simple, magical Christmas table setting.

Plan ahead

I know it sounds boring, but anything that causes less stress on Christmas Day gets a thumbs up from me. Have a practise with any table decorations (they don’t have to be perfect, it will just mean that you know ahead of time if something will work or not. Get napkins and tablecloths ready, washed and ironed (if you’re going to iron them).

Keep it simple

Make sure you leave enough room on the table for the food. I make this mistake every year! There are always more dishes on the table at Christmas. Add into the mix extra candles, Christmas crackers and foliage or a centrepiece and suddenly there’s nowhere to put the food! Keep it simple with a few curated ceramics and some simple, standout flowers.

Add some sparkle

I don’t think it’s possible to have too many fairy lights at Christmas

And some pops of colour

This year I’ve found myself adding more and more colour to my designs and tables settings. I think beautiful colour tones - especially ones that work quite magically together - really lift my mood. I’d highly recommend it.

Don’t forget the candles

For me, a table isn’t complete without candles. Try using different heights for a relaxed look that is more balanced and feels less “done.”

Finally, Make it special for your guests

Be aware of the things you know make people smile and feel relaxed and at home in your space. Take the time to sit where your guests will be and pay attention where their gaze will land while they’re seated. Put fluffy sheepskins and cushions on the chairs, and face them towards the Christmas tree or some twinkly lights and candles. Light some scented candles before they arrive and put on a playlist ahead of time so they feel the party atmosphere as soon as they walk through the door.
